Twenty-five million bricks and the latest in engineering, Fort Pulaski was supposed to be impregnable. In 1862 rifled cannons cracked its walls in 30 hours from a mile and a half away — and proved masonry forts obsolete overnight. The great breach still stands, part of the National Park memorial on Cockspur Island near Tybee.
