The largest stone fort ever built in the United States — a seven-sided bastion with a moat, guarding the entrance to the Chesapeake. It earned the name 'Freedom's Fortress' during the Civil War, when runaway slaves were declared contraband and given their freedom inside its walls. Old Point Comfort, where the first Africans arrived in 1619, lies right next door.
